ISIS claims responsibility for blast that killed at least eight people in Syria

ISIS has claimed responsibility for an explosion in Syria that killed at least eight people in a  U.S.-patrolled area in the country, sources told CNN Wednesday.

The attack by the ISIS-affiliated Amaq agency was said to have been carried out by a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest. The spokesman of the Manbij military council said there were initial reports of casualties in Manbij's busy market street.

A spokesperson for the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS wrote on Twitter that American service members were killed while conducting a routine patrol in Syria.

"We are still gathering information and will share additional details at a later time," the tweet said.

White House Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the president has been briefed on the situation.

The attack comes less than one month after President Donald Trump declared victory over ISIS in Syria and announced his plan to withdraw all U.S. forces from the country. In a video released on Twitter, Trump said: "We have won against ISIS. We've beaten them and we've beaten them badly. We've taken back the land and now it's time for our troops to come back home."
